Cost-Of-Living Crisis Conference – STUC / Poverty Alliance

June 17 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

The STUC, in partnership with the Poverty Alliance, is organising a day of discussion and planning. We will bring together representatives of grassroots community organisations with trade unionists not only to understand how this crisis is impacting our communities and workplaces, but to identify the priority actions we need to turn the tide on the crisis.

As a society, we believe in justice and compassion. But, right now, hundreds of thousands of people are living in poverty. All of us – and especially those in government – have a moral responsibility to make sure that everyone in our country has the incomes they need, and the same chances to a life where their human dignity is respected.

Instead, we have had a decade of stagnating pay, attacks on the social security net we all rely on, and cuts to public services that left people across Scotland exposed when the pandemic struck. And now – before we have even recovered from COVID – workers are being hit by a cost-of-living crisis which will sweep thousands more into poverty. Faced with the biggest fall in living standards since the 1950s, community organisations and trade unions in Scotland are coming together to demand real action to build a society where everyone has the access to the income and services we all need to live a dignified life.

The day will combine workshops in the morning on the major issues faced by communities and groups of workers and workshops in the afternoon aimed at organising, building joint campaigns and working together to achieve our shared goals.

We will hear from unions, community and campaign organisations, many of whom are working at the grassroots.

Union reps and activists are welcome to attend. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
