SUMMARY:Glasgow Belongs to Us! A Summit on Ownership and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Glasgow Against Closures invites you to join us on Saturday 01 October to explore\, critique and challenge Glasgow’s affinity for closures and cuts to our venues\, jobs and services.  \nGlasgow Against Closures has now been campaigning to save our city’s venues for 18 months. In this time we have seen pushback from the City Council and Glasgow Life\, who have attempted to justify the sustained closure of our cities libraries\, leisure centres\, community centres and cultural venues. But we have also witnessed the power of local communities\, trade unions and targeted campaigns\, and localised democratic structures including community councils\, to resist any such justifications\, and get our venues reopened.  \nAfter over a year of campaigning\, it’s time for us to share what we’ve learned\, and learn ourselves about the greater socio-economic and cultural context within Glasgow that our campaign has been elevated and shaped by. Our conference on October 01 will bring our campaigners together with speakers from community campaigns\, trade unions and other groups investing in the needs of the people of this city.  \nOur sessions have been selected to shed light on information relating to our core campaign demands. Since the beginning of our campaign\, these demands have remained unchanged. \n\nStop the closures!\n\nThe City Council must do everything in their power to make sure that all publicly owned venues will never permanently close\, and all of them reopen as soon as possible. \n\nThey belong to the people!\n\nThe City Council must commit to keeping all our venues under public ownership\, reject Community Asset Transfers and shelve the controversial ‘People Make Glasgow Communities’ scheme.  \n\nEnd Glasgow Life!\n\nThe City Council must create a mechanism to bring the staff and assets of Glasgow back into direct Council management as done with other failed Arms-Length Organisations.  \n  \nSUMMIT AGENDA – Speakers and session leaders to be announced! \n11am – 12pm – Welcome and plenary session with Glasgow Against Closures \n12pm – 1pm – Attendees can choose from a session on community ownership or session on cuts to services and funding \n1pm – 2pm – Break for lunch (we will not be providing lunch\, but hot drinks and other refreshments will be available throughout.) \n2pm – 3pm – Attendees can choose from a session on localised and alternative democracies or session on Glasgow’s cultural history \n3pm – 4pm – Closing rally and call to action \n4.30pm – Informal social wind-down nearby \nPlease contact glasgowagainstclosures@gmail.com to let us know about any dietary or accessibility requirements you may have\, or if you have any other questions about the event. \nBook your free space here!

SUMMARY:Bus Regulation\, The Musical: Screening And Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join Get Glasgow Moving for a screening of ‘Bus Regulation: The Musical’\, as performed at the CCA in April this year. \nCreated by Glasgow-based artist Ellie Harrison\, ‘Bus Regulation: The Musical’ is inspired by the 1980s hit musical ‘Starlight Express’\, and features performers on roller skates to re-enact the history of public transport provision in the Strathclyde region from the post-war period to the present day. You can watch the recording here! \nBeginning with the municipal ownership of buses in the 1960s\, through the 1968 Transport Act which created the Greater Glasgow PTE and the Trans-Clyde integrated system in 1979\, ‘Bus Regulation: The Musical’ takes you into the chaos caused by bus de-regulation in 1986\, the numerous mergers & takeovers of the 1990s that followed\, right up to the fragmented and expensive system we’re left with as a result. The Musical concludes with a celebration of Get Glasgow Moving’s proposals to re-regulate our region’s buses in order to create a world-class\, fully-integrated and affordable public transport network fit for the 21st century. \nThe 30-minute screening will be introduced by Ellie Harrison and other members of the Get Glasgow Moving committee. It will be followed by a Q&A and discussion about how you can get involved in the campaign by responding to SPT’s consultation on our new Regional Transport Strategy (open for 12 weeks from late July/early August 2022). \nBook your free tickets here!

SUMMARY:Public Meeting - Save Ruchill Community Centre!
DESCRIPTION:A public meeting to discuss the future of Ruchill Community Centre\, supported by the Glasgow Against Closures Campaign. \nOver a year since the end of lockdown measures\, Ruchill Community Centre remains closed and its services unable to operate. During this time\, Glasgow Life\, who are responsible for maintaining the building\, have failed to provide this maintenance\, allowing the building to fall into disrepair. The Council now projects huge costs to get the centre back up and running\, causing further delays to the centre’s reopening.  \n\nHas the centre fallen victim to Council / Glasgow Life oversight\, or to a targeted devaluation?\nWhat is the most effective route to reopening and sustaining the community centre?\nWho should be responsible for maintaining and operating the community centre to ensure its sustainable future?\nHow can we support the users of the community centre to reclaim their space?\n\nGet in touch or find out more here!

SUMMARY:Building Collective Power - Workshop with Breathe
DESCRIPTION:BUILDING COLLECTIVE POWER – WORKSHOP WITH BREATHE \nWe tell stories because it is easy to forget that we are not the first to suffer\, resist\, love and die. \nThis session is about empowering community members and activists to build deep relationships based on trust\, in order to create collective power. Prioritising people and relationships over the work is an act of resistance to the system itself\, that creates deep solidarity where we show up for each other’s campaigns and in moments of crisis. Crucially\, it also helps builds deep-rooted sustainable movements for the long-fight. \nNo need to book. \nEvent website here!

SUMMARY:SOCIAL POWER NETWORK SCOTLAND PILOT WORKSHOP: CLIMBING OUT OF OUR SILOS - CAN WE TACKLE BIG ISSUES TOGETHER?
DESCRIPTION:The key ambition of Social Power Scotland is to explore whether there is value in creating a new space for change-makers to come together to pool knowledge\, ideas and resources that could strengthen their ability to drive change – individually and collectively.   \nTogether\, Scottish campaigners\, community leaders and activists have designed a new network for change-makers from right across civil society in Scotland. It is based on a belief that there is value in civil society coming together across its parts\, from people working deep in communities to people working on the national stage. That there is value in sharing perspectives across issues\, in moving out of our siloes to explore common challenges. That we can learn a huge amount from each other as well as building energy and momentum by openly talking\, sharing\, pondering. That in coming together\, civil society in Scotland can build its power to drive change individually and collectively.   \nEach session\, two network members will kick things off\, talking about how they have approached the challenge. We’ll then share our own experiences\, swap intelligence and insights\, consider where there are gaps we need to fill\, and what we can learn. The sessions will be informal\, with light touch facilitation just to keep things moving. We will set our own agendas\, hear from others\, make connections\, pull out learning from successes as well as mistakes. Ultimately\, we want to come away inspired and curious about what our own next steps could be and open to new possibilities.

SUMMARY:Cost-Of-Living Crisis Conference - STUC / Poverty Alliance
DESCRIPTION:The STUC\, in partnership with the Poverty Alliance\, is organising a day of discussion and planning. We will bring together representatives of grassroots community organisations with trade unionists not only to understand how this crisis is impacting our communities and workplaces\, but to identify the priority actions we need to turn the tide on the crisis. \nAs a society\, we believe in justice and compassion. But\, right now\, hundreds of thousands of people are living in poverty. All of us – and especially those in government – have a moral responsibility to make sure that everyone in our country has the incomes they need\, and the same chances to a life where their human dignity is respected. \nInstead\, we have had a decade of stagnating pay\, attacks on the social security net we all rely on\, and cuts to public services that left people across Scotland exposed when the pandemic struck. And now – before we have even recovered from COVID – workers are being hit by a cost-of-living crisis which will sweep thousands more into poverty. Faced with the biggest fall in living standards since the 1950s\, community organisations and trade unions in Scotland are coming together to demand real action to build a society where everyone has the access to the income and services we all need to live a dignified life. \nThe day will combine workshops in the morning on the major issues faced by communities and groups of workers and workshops in the afternoon aimed at organising\, building joint campaigns and working together to achieve our shared goals. \nWe will hear from unions\, community and campaign organisations\, many of whom are working at the grassroots. \nUnion reps and activists are welcome to attend. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

SUMMARY:Research For Action Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The transition to a climate-neutral Urban Mobility requires action. Local and regional authorities hold the keys to advancing the transition on the ground. Their leaders need Research & Innovation to provide them with useful insights and practical solutions\, to ensure critical priorities are implemented in a fair\, efficient and effective way.  \nThis Workshop will be shaped as a discussion among peers\, focusing on three issues: \n\nWhat is currently ‘hot’ in urban mobility R&I to accelerate decarbonisation? \nHow can we orient urban mobility research to best support leaders in advancing the transition to Sustainable Urban Mobility\, through “avoid-shift-improve” policies? \nHow can we ensure a continued level of EU-UK cooperation in this domain? \n\nOutput from this Workshop will be shared with the leaders attending the POLIS Leadership Summit “The Transition to Zero-Emission” (following day\, 8th of June)\, and guide our efforts to position Urban Mobility R&I as an essential activity in Horizon Europe. \nThis affiliated session is organised in cooperation with Innovate UK and ERTRAC. \nIt will address upcoming funding and project development\, exploring how cities\, regions and knowledge institutes can make the most of research and innovation opportunities. \nThe workshop is aimed at academic and research institutions focusing on: \n\nLeading issues in urban mobility R&I which are working to accelerate decarbonisation.\nOrienting urban mobility research to best support leaders in advancing the transition to Sustainable Urban Mobility.\nHow to ensure a continued level of EU-UK interaction and cooperation.
